Float For The Coast 2018
- On Friday, August 17th, Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) and its Assateague COASTKEEPER program are partnering with Oceana and the Ocean City Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation for “Float for the Coast,” an on-the-water rally in support of clean water. The Float will be both a celebration to embrace the water quality protections that allow thousands of locals and visitors alike to recreate safely in our Coastal Bays and a demonstration to raise awareness about the ongoing and looming threats to our fragile coastal waters.
Float For The Coast, the only on-the-water activist event of this kind on Delmarva, returns for the 4th year to the waters of Isle of Wight Bay, directly behind the Ocean City Convention Center during the annual Maryland Assocation of Counties summer meeting. A flotilla of kayaks, canoes, stand-up-paddleboards and other floating water craft will paddle up Isle of Wight Bay from Fish Tales at 22nd St. to the Convention Center to participate in a call to action to protect clean water and a healthy ocean.
- Participant check-in starts at 10:00 a.m. at Fish Tales Bar and Grill/Bahia Marina located bayside on 22nd St. in Ocean City. Paddlers will launch from this site and the rally will convene at Noon in Isle of Wight Bay adjacent to the Convention Center. An additional launch site is available at 48th St. Watersports for those that would like a shorter paddling route. Paddle route maps are available below.

There will be guest speakers on the water to give a call to action on issues such as offshore oil development, ocean plastic pollution, and clean energy production in wind and solar. All participants will gather together to raise their paddles and give a loud cheer at 12:00 pm, then everyone will make their paddle back to Bahia Marina, where an 'After-Float' party will be hosted by RAR Brewery at Fish Tales.
(Consider using the Alternate Launch Site as your beginning and end paddle route if the longer round trip from Fish Tales may be too long a paddle for you.)
