  • ACT BOARD DRAFTS STATEMENT ON THE USE OF OFFSHORE WIND FARMS FOR CLEAN ENERGY

  • On December 9, 2009 the Board of Directors of the Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) approved a Position Statement of Support for the use of off shore wind farms as a means to generate cleaner, more sustainable, energy sources for the coastal watershed.

A committee of scientists and engineers sitting on the ACT Board of Directors spent the past year researching this issue and addressing concerns from Board members regarding the environmental impacts from off-shore wind farms. Several workshops were held and the result of the project is the official Position of Support by the ACT Board of Directors.

"The Assateague Coastal Trust recognizes the need to wean our local power plants away from dirty coal," stated Jim Rapp, President of ACT, "The coal that generates our local energy contributes to increasing carbon emissions, increasing levels of mercury in our fish, and the destruction of mountaintops and communities in Appalachia."

Rapp continued, "Wind energy is one big step away from dirty coal, and a step closer to a cleaner, greener future for our coastal communities."

August 2007 - Assateague Coastal Trust and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) released the NRDC “Testing the Waters” 2006 report. Using data just collected from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the report, “Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches,” showed that water samples exceeding the standard for bacteria at Maryland beaches increased to 13 percent in 2006 from 9 percent in 2005. Testing sites included beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, barrier islands, Atlantic coastal bays and other bays and sounds.
