When: Saturday, November 2nd
Time: 9 am - 11:30 am
Meeting Location: Recycling Center Parking Lot at Berlin, Walmart
Asstateague Coastal Trust and The Delmarva Free School (DFS) are inviting the public to come together for a Community Watershed Cleanup on Holly Grove Rd. in Berlin on Saturday, November 2nd from 9:30 am - 11:30 am.
Holly Grove Road swamp drains to Ayers Creek, which flows to Newport Bay before coming to the confluence of Sinepuxent and Chincoteague Bays behind Assateague Island.
Not your typical cleanup, this community watershed stewardship opportunity will focus on removing the accumulated trash on a public transportation route. To ensure the safety of all volunteers during the cleanup, ACT and DFS have organized for two Worcester County law enforcement patrol vehicles to accompany participants for the duration of the event. ACT and DFS will have on site compostable trash bags, gloves, and safety vests for participants. Participants are encouraged to bring their own trash "grabbers" if they have them.
Those planning to attend must RSVP by Thursday, October 31st by contacting Billy Weiland at billy@actforbays.org or Kelly McMullen at thedelmarvafreeschool@gmail.com.
Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions and wear hard soled shoes, preferably boots.
Participants will meet ACT and DFS at the recycling center in front of the Berlin Walmart at 9 am for check-in, team organizing, and supplies. Passenger vans will shuttle participants from the recycling center to Holy Grove Rd. for the cleanup at 9:30 am.
ACT's Billy Weiland and the DFS founder Kelly McMullen have spent the past several months organizing this pinnacle, advocacy oriented event through a series of Ecopsychology Gatherings that took place over the past summer on Assateague Island. The gatherings facilitated a unique, solution based philosophical approach to understanding environmental issues and challenges facing modern day societies.
After attending the October Worcester County Commissioners Meeting to present the idea of a volunteer based, community cleanup on Holy Grove Rd., ACT and DFS were granted permission to carry out a much needed cleanup of one of the corridors to our areas National Seashore. Further, elected officials at the meeting expressed their sincere gratitude toward ACT and DFS for our commitment and efforts. We anticipate a follow up event that will concentrate efforts on Sinepuxent Rd.
This project was made possible by a funding award from the National Park Service and the Outdoor Foundation.

November Gathering On Assateague Island

On November 2nd, the public is invited to join ACT's Billy Weiland and the Free School's Kelly McMullen for a gathering on Assateague Island from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm. This gathering will take place on the beach up from the pavilion in the North Ocean Beach parking lot of the national seashore.
This is an 'around-the-fire', organic get together that will bring a philosophical element to environmental discussions. Bring a blanket or chair, food, drinks, and acoustic instruments if you have them.
