Peninsula Exploration Series

Picture

Saturday, April 11th
Tour One: 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Clam Bake: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Meeting Location: Bayside Drive at Assateague Island National Seashore

ACT is excited to announce that we are in the planning stages for a Spring kayak tour along the Sinepuxent Bay. Tour One of ACT's Peninsula Exploration Series will begin at the waters edge along the bayside of Bayside Drive on Assateague Island National Seashore.

Tour One is the first of a series of tours that ACT is organizing to host across the Delmarva Peninsula for 2020 with the purpose of bringing individuals closer to the natural environments and ecosystems of the coastal region. Through the lens of science, the record of history, and the philosophy of The Marsh, the Peninsula Exploration Series aims to strengthen our relationship with, and understanding of Nature and our natural environments.

Tour One will take place on Saturday, April 11th. Led by ACT's Billy Weiland, Jim Rapp of Delmarva Birding Weekends, Joe Fehrer of The Nature Conservancy, and Kim Check of the Virginia Space Flight Academy, we will lead a small group on a kayak tour of the backcountry marshes and small bay islands of Assateague Island. This is an opportunity to explore parts of Assateague that many have never experienced. The immersive and educational day trip along the Sinepuxent is ideal for birding enthusiasts and those looking to learn more about the history and coastal geology of Assateague Island.

Tour One will begin at 9:30 am as we kayak south from Bayside Drive. Paddlers will meander through the diverse maze of marsh and visit some of the islands backcountry sites like Tingles Island, Little Levels, and Pine Tree.

Following the tour, participants will be treated to a clam bake at our bayside campsite. Seafood, veggies, light Hors d'oeuvres, and beverages are included in the Tour One package price.

Due to the exclusive nature of this day trip, we are opening Tour One to 10 spaces. This opportunity is open to individuals that have kayak experience and are capable of paddling several miles.

As we continue to build and organize this first tour of the Peninsula Exploration Series, further details will be available on ACT's Tour One website page. REGISTRATION WILL OPEN IN EARLY MARCH.

Individuals interested in joining ACT on Tour One of the Peninsula Exploration Series should contact Billy Weiland at billy@actforbays.org
