OUR COASTAL BAYS WATERSHED
Assateague Coastal Trust’s primary focus is on the Coastal Bays watershed, an approximately 175 square mile area encompassing most of Worcester County Maryland, the northeast portion of Accomack County on Virginia’s eastern shore, and the southernmost portion of Sussex County Delaware.
Known for its rich soils and productive waters, the region has traditionally supported vibrant farming, fishing, and tourism industries. The watershed is home to a host of wildlife species who thrive in habitats as diverse as pine forests, salt marshes, and freshwater creeks.
Since pollution does not recognize political boundaries, and neighboring areas lack strong advocacy organizations, ACT is sometimes called or compelled to extend our work beyond our home watershed to the wider lower Eastern Shore region, including Wicomico and Somerset counties in Maryland.
ACT also engages in statewide and, on rare occasions, national legislative and regulatory advocacy matters when the issues and consequences have an impact on our watershed or region.
